Montecillo 2015 Reserva

The 2015 leads with generous black cherry on the nose.  On the palate, it offers generous red fruit with generous but balanced notes of tobacco, cedar cigar box, all wrapped in an envelope of moderate tannins.  Medium red in color, balanced in body with good "grip" in the finish.  This wine is a fantastic value and a true year-after-year Rioja classic.

The blend of 90% Tempranillo, 7% Mazuelo and 3% Garnacha lends this wine a bit of cassis and green peppery appeal, with well-balanced acidity lending the wine a freshness despite its 8 years of aging.  The inclusion of Mazuelo (and Graciano) is a direction the Montecillo estate is increasingly embracing.  These two varietals add a balance, freshness, and an added level of aromatic interest to the wine. To our tasters, the blend in the 2015 Montecillo Reserva gives it a "baby Castillo Ygay" character.  Considering the Ygay is $225 a bottle, the Montecillo Reserva is a wonderful find at a great price.
