Telmo Rodriguez 2019 Ladeiras Do Xil As Caborcas Valdeorras Tinto
Telmo Rodriguez has become one of Spain's most exciting wine makers over the past decade. His family owned Remelluri (of which he now makes again) but he stretched his wings early by making wine in different locations. He has become a strong proponent of single vineyard wines and has really worked at identifying vineyards that are worth featuring in a bottle. His project Ladeiras do Xil (meaning the hillsides of the Sil River) began in 2002 and at this point the wines have hit a high point.
As Caborcas is a 2.5 hectare vineyard that faces north and west with a mix of old vines on the steep hillsides. This is vibrant and expressive and practically leaps out of the glass. Elegance and intensity are in perfect balance with this. Bright, tangy red fruits, spice, crushed rock and a long, delicious finish.

94 points James Suckling: "Red fruit and spices on the nose with crushed stone and slate. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins and undertones of spice and light green pepper. Drink or hold."
96+ points Luis Gutierrez The Wine Advocate: "I was really looking forward to the 2018 As Caborcas, a multi-grape red produced with Mencía, Merenzao, Sousón, Garnacha, Godello, Brancellao and other grapes from ancient vines on granite terraces. It fermented in small oak and stainless steel vats and had a soft élevage in 1,500- and 2,000-liter foudres to preserve its Atlantic profile. This is a little more reticent than Falcoeira but more open than O Diviso, but the three showed superbly in 2018. It takes some time in the glass to unfurl the As Caborcas perfume—decayed blue flowers, wild and Atlantic, berries and herbs, subtle and elegant. Simply superb. 2,460 bottles were filled in June 2020."
