Mustiguillo 2021 Mestizaje Bobal

Mustiguillo 2021 Mestizaje Bobal - The Spanish Table

Mustiguillo 2021 Mestizaje Bobal

Deep in color with an intriguing nose of black fruits, violets, cedar and black pepper. The fleshy dark fruit flavors of blackberry and black currant are lifted by brink mineral acidity (this is where those limestone soils come through) and fine tannins. Leaves you on a nice sweet and spicy finish, a perfect pair with anything cooked over fire & smoke.  And, despite its generous fruit, it only clocks in at 13.5% alcohol.

This wine is one of several excellent wines from the Mustiguillo estate.  Mustiguillo was recognized for their extraordinary efforts by Wine & Spirits as one of the Top 100 Wineries of 2012. But that accolade took a while to reach.  In the late 1990’s, the estate's founder, Toni Sarrion, began a one man crusade to save the
indigenous variety Bobal and coax it from obscurity and rusticity to the forefront of truly world class wines.  Ever evolving and pushing the quality level forward, Mustiguillo has moved away from the use of overt American oak as seen in earlier vintages in favor of concrete and French oak for wines of finesse & balance, realizing the potential of Bobal from the unique terroir of El Terrerazo.

91 WA - Luis Gutierrez: “I also tasted the red 2020 Mestizaje, a blend of Bobal with 16% Garnacha and 14% Syrah
with 13.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.56 with 5.65 grams of acidity (tartaric) from their vines
in Terrrerazo at 800 meters in altitude. It fermented in French oak and stainless steel and
matured in a combination of 225- and 500-liter oak barrels and oak vats for 10 months. It’s
primary and immediate without the depth and complexity of the 2019 but really pleasant and
with a tender, velvety palate with some chalky tannins and a tasty finish.”
