Alta Pavina Citius Pinot Noir 2014

Alta Pavina Citius Pinot Noir 2014 - The Spanish Table

Alta Pavina Citius Pinot Noir 2014

Pinot Noir from Spain? And from the Duero valley no less? Yep, it is so. And it is surprisingly good. Alta Pavina is run by the Ortega brothers who took over the vineyard that was planted by their father in 1985 high on the plains just south of Ribera del Duero. At just over 3000 feet the grapes get the cool nights that are necessary to get good balance and elegance.

"The unusual and peachy 2014 Citius Pinot Noir was produced with grapes planted in 1985 at 1,000 meters in altitude on sandy and limestone soils. After a cold soak, it fermented in stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts, followed by 18 months in French barriques. It has contained ripeness, good integration of the oak with the fruit and a tasty palate with marked flavors and very fine tannins, elegant and balanced. Quite original." 91+ points Luis Gutierrez The Wine Advocate
