Mas d'en Blei 2017 Clos Martina, Priorat
Mas d'en Blei 2017 Clos Martina, Priorat
From the historic Mas d’En Blei estate in Priorat, Clos Martina is a unique white wine crafted from Garnacha Blanca (84%), Pedro Ximenez (10%), and Xarel·lo (6%), a blend that is rare even in this diverse region. The grapes come from the Clos Martina vineyard, named using the Catalan term “clos,” which reflects a special plot or enclosure. Garnacha Blanca provides structure and richness, while the Pedro Ximenez contributes bright acidity, and the Xarel·lo imparts a distinct citrus and mineral edge. Barrel fermentation adds layers of complexity, making this a standout wine.
On the nose and palate, Clos Martina evolves beautifully as it warms. When chilled, expect sharp citrus pith and grilled Meyer lemon with a hint of toasty oak, reminiscent of still Xarel·lo wines from Penedès. As it warms, the wine unfolds into warm vanilla, nutmeg, and honeyed pear or apple tart, with Garnacha Blanca’s character shining through. Despite its age and oak influence, it remains lean and fresh, offering a tasting experience that bridges crisp vibrancy and layered depth.
Clos Martina pairs best with semi-rich seafood dishes like seared scallops, seabass, or seafood paella. It also complements lean, chalky cheeses such as Garotxa or fresh goat cheese. Avoid overly rich pairings, as the wine’s bracing acidity and unique profile thrive in clean, balanced pairings. If you'd like to ride a wine train where the engine is the mouthfeel of Albariño and the caboose is a Burgundian power-wine, Clos Martina is where you want to be seated.
