Lopez De Heredia Vina Tondonia Blanco Gran Reserva Rioja 1968

Lopez De Heredia Vina Tondonia Blanco Gran Reserva Rioja 1968
The 1968 Tondonia Blanco Gran Reserva is a truly singular and delicious wine. What I find fascinating is that these continue to bottled by hand, corked by hand and then sealed with wax all by hand. I've been fortunate enough to be there while they were doing it, so it's not just a story. Notes of dried apricot and apricot pit. Orange zest, honeycomb, mustard seed, almond and a briny, saline note that brings to mind a Manzanilla Pasada. Great texture, but not heavy in any way. And a finish of honeycomb and macadamia nut teased with a little tarragon. Was absolutely delicious with a lobster pasta with sherry sauce. Do not drink this too cold or you lose all the complexity. Ideal is 50 to 60 degrees Farenheit. "Impressively youthful and vivid. From the vibrant green-gold color to the lively acidity, this white is firm and focused. The flavors resemble Manzanilla Sherry, with almond, briny and citrus notes, but there's a core of pear and cream that adds voluptuousness to elegance. Shows no sign of decay.--Lopez de Heredia vertical. Drink now through 2010. 1,500 cases made." 94 points Wine Spectator.
