Jorge Ordonez & Co Old Vines Moscatel #1 Seleccion Especial
Jorge Ordonez & Co Old Vines Moscatel #1 Seleccion Especial
The No. 1 Seleccion Especial is the first in a series of 3 dessert wines Jorge Ordoñez makes from the Moscatel de Alexandria grape variety grown on steep slopes high above Malaga. This wine presents aromas bright honeyed stone fruit and white flowers, and features a distinct acidity rare in dessert wines. It is fresh and engaging, not fortified, and an amazing experience in a class to itself.
“The 2023 Selección Especial #1 (100% Moscatel) is light gold-hued and offers classic exotic and tropical notes of honeyed lychee, crushed mint, and floral aromas and flavors. It's lively and mediumbodied, with a seamless mouthfeel and good balance between its sweetness and freshness. It will absolutely shine with a fruit dessert.” 92 Pts, Jeb Dunnuck
This wine is made by by fermenting late-harvested grapes, and stopping their fermentation by chilling before the fermentation is complete. This leaves delicious fruit aroma intact, and preserves some of the grapes sweetness. These wines are not fortified, thus preserving a freshness rare in dessert wines, and making them a nice low 10.5% alcohol, perfect for a gentle dessert course.
Bodegas Jorge Ordóñez Málaga, located in Ordóñez’s hometown, was founded in 2004. A partnership between Ordóñez and the Kracher family of Austria, the winery was founded with the goal of resuscitating the centuries long tradition of winemaking in Málaga, which was destroyed by the phylloxera plague in the 19th century. It was Jorge’s dream to champion his home region and restore it to its former glory.
