Quinta Do Vallado 2019 Reserva Douro (field blend)

Quinta Do Vallado 2019 Reserva Douro (field blend)

"The 2018 Reserva is a field blend (some 35 grapes from vines ranging from 60 years old to centenarian vines), principally Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca, all aged for 16 months in 38% new French barriques. It comes in at 14.8% alcohol. This seems impeccably balanced, caressing in texture and elegant. It handles the wood better than the Coroa this issue, seeming immediately more complex, yet still lush and a little sexy. The mid-palate shows some finesse, and this finishes with intensity, both in flavor and power. The tannins, though, are not at all hard. That will make people want to drink this very young. As I said with the Coroa, you can—but you shouldn't. This will come together much better over the next few years, showing more harmony and pulling in the wood. I'd pick this of the two, but reasonable minds might differ. They both have considerable upside potential, and they both might make me rethink things along the way. Of the three upper-level Vallado reds this issue (this, the Coroa and including the much pricier Granja), this might well be the best wine. It is plainly the best value." 94 pts Mark Squires The Wine Advocate
